Wendy Sysouphat, Forest flight II 1999

Forest Flight II
1999

Description: This artwork shows three dragonflies with shining, whirring wings on a high-speed flight through the forest. Particular attention is given to the patterning on these dragonflies, including the fantastically intricate venation of their wings. The forest is suggested by a few subtle leaves and vines, and by the slightly textured background fabric.
Medium: Textile art. Appliqué, and hand stitching including straight stitch, running stitch, whipped back stitch, stem stitch, chain, cable chain, and square chain stitch, blanket stitch, herringbone stitch, closed feather stitch, Cretan stitch, and coral stitch, using cotton thread, metallic thread, and textured linen/cotton mix fabric.

Wendy Sysouphat, The spice garden 2012

The Spice Garden
2012

Description: The Spice Garden is inspired by the bright colours and the spices for which the city of Marrakesh is famous, and also by the Jardin Majorelle, which is a beautiful botanical garden not far from the city centre. This artwork features in particular the spice plants ginger, cinnamon, green cardamom, black pepper, turmeric, and saffron, each of which is growing in a colourful, decorated flowerpot.
Medium: Textile art. Appliqué, and hand stitching including straight stitch, back stitch, whipped back stitch, laced spaced back stitch, stem stitch, whipped stem stitch, blanket stitch, fly stitch, chain stitch, detached chain stitch, French knot, couching, and beading, using cotton and synthetic threads, metallic thread, silk ribbon, glass and synthetic beads, and fabrics including cottons, polycotton, and synthetic.

Medium: Textile art. Layered fabrics, appliqué, and hand stitching including French knots, feathered and zig-zag chain stitch, blanket stitch, double and triple feather stitch, Cretan stitch, herringbone stitch, coral stitch, and scroll stitch, using cotton and synthetic threads, metallic thread, glass beads, and fabrics including cottons, linens, silk, metallics, crinkle pearl nylon organza, and velvet.

Wendy Sysouphat, Pisces 1999

Pisces
1999

Description: Two graceful trout feature in this interpretation of the constellation and star sign Pisces, the Fishes. The circular water splashes illustrate the arrangement of the stars in Pisces, while the water ripples reference the right ascension and declination grid lines marking the position of this constellation in the sky. On close examination you will see other details, for example the major stars
are labeled with Greek letters indicating the order of their brightness in the night sky, beginning with alpha as the brightest.
Medium: Textile art. Free machine stitching and laid thread technique, using cotton, synthetic, and linen threads, metallic thread, and linen fabric.

Wendy Sysouphat, Hardenbergia violacea, Native lilac 1998

Native Lilac, Hardenbergia violacea
1998

Description: Native lilac, also known as happy wanderer or purple coral pea, is a climbing plant or scrambling shrub that is native to southern and eastern Australia. The stems often form lovely, twining, spiraling shapes, and in winter to spring the plant produces a profusion of purple pea flowers. This species is extremely popular as a drought tolerant garden plant.
Medium: Textile art. Hand stitching including straight stitch, stem stitch, chain stitch, and buttonhole stitch, using cotton thread and textured cotton fabric.
